Writing is a wonderful side hustle because the skill is very much in demand! No matter what industry you’re in, you have to have a basic level of writing. Even if it’s just writing a proper email!
I got the great opportunity to talk with Brittny Pierre who runs a blog called Pierre Into My Life. She uses her writing skill to fill the growing demand for writers in various fields.
What’s your day job/primary hustle?
I’m a project manager for professional development in education.
What’s your side hustle?
My side hustle is founder and Editor in Chief of Pierre into My Life and a freelance journalist.
Does your primary hustle and side hustle work together/one benefit the other?
They are completely different from one another. The great benefit from working at my primary job is I had to build that job from the bottom up. I had to do a lot of trial and error, and organize to figure out the best way to plan everything. There was no structure when the job was given to me. It really helped me plan out Pierre into My Life. Although, I’ve been a journalist for several years, it’s completely different with building a blog and a following. Now I’m building from the bottom up and there will be a lot of trial and error and there’s a lot of planning and organizing involved.
What’s your advice to other side hustlers?
Sometimes, we can’t fall into what we ideally want to do and have to create our side hustle or it doesn’t become a full-time job. It can be disappointing. But, it’s always better to have a full time job that helps pay the bills and gives you free time to focus on your side hustle. It can be exhausting working two jobs and trying to have a social life, but at the end of the day it’s truly rewarding to do what you love to do.

How do you manage both?
I plan ahead every week of what articles I want to write and how much time it will take me to write it. I’ll try and create an outline during my lunch breaks and then write the articles at home.
Why do you love it?
Personally, I enjoy writing my own content and not having to wait for an editor to accept or change it around. I’m glad with my job I have the freedom to be able to work on my side hustle if I have to.
Anything upcoming that you’re excited about?
I am starting a series called Create Your Own Destiny where I interview women of color who are succeeding in their fields. It’s been an idea I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I’m looking forward for it to go live soon.
